STRATFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A quick-thinking customer saves the day after attacking the gunman who was trying to rob a convenience store in Stratford.

Police were called to the Dolly's Express Deli at 6 Boston Ave. for the report of a robbery and shots fired on Saturday night.

According to police, the suspect entered the store and displayed a black handgun and demanded money from the clerk.

"The guy came in with the gun and demanded money to my nephew. My nephew put the money in the bag and gave it to him," said George Uyar, the uncle of the store clerk.

At one point, when the suspect was not looking, a customer struck the suspect with a Corona bottle.

Police said a violent fight ensued, and during the struggle the suspect fired his gun, grazing the customer's shoulder.

The suspect fled the scene without his gun and without any money, and there were no serious injuries reported.

"That's kind of crazy; he's brave for that one," said Rocky Joseph of Stratford.

The suspect is described as a thin black male wearing all black.

"Thank God everyone is OK and nothing happened," Uyar added.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Stratford Detective Bureau at (203) 285-4119.
