Charity hosts wig drive for cancer patients

VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Wigs are more than fashion statements for some women but for those battling cancer it can make a difference in how they feel about themselves while in the fight for their lives.

A Warren county cancer charity wants these women to wig out with your help.

The Believers of Faith Cancer Organization hopes these boxes will soon be overflowing with hair pieces of all lengths and textures.

The Vicksburg charity is hosting a wig drive for cancer patients and survivors. This mission is especially important to Carolyn Butler, the organization's founder and director.

The five year cancer survivor was diagnosed with breast cancer in July of 2009.

"When you're facing cancer especially as a female and one that loses their hair during treatment it does a lot to your self esteem when you lose your hair because for a female that's a part of your beauty. That's a part of your self esteem," said Butler.

Fourteen drop off locations are spread across Warren county, including three branches of Bancorp South and the Tax Assessor's Office.

The wig drive continues through September 14th.

"Our goal is to raise a thousand plus wigs and so we're accepting new wigs, used wigs and we're just excited. It's just gonna be a great event, and we're here to lend a helping hand to the citizens of warren county and the surrounding areas," said Warren County Tax Assessor Angela Brown.

The collected wigs will be donated to the American Cancer Society at the Believers of Faith third annual fashion show and silent auction on September 18th at the Riverwalk Casino.

The wig drive was inspired by Adrienne Gamble works with the Look Good Feel Better program at St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson. There cancer patients get free makeup kits, as well as classes in wearing wigs, turban and scarves.

"I want them to feel like they are beautiful women not just from the inside but from the outside and that they can go and just rock a nice outfit, have nice hair , a beautiful face and just feel gorgeous even if they don't feel gorgeous when they leave treatments," said Gamble."

Believers of Faith also has an account set up at Bancorp South for financial contributions.
