JPS teachers kick off the school year

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Tuesday was the first day back to work for Jackson Public School teachers.

Before they hit the classroom, there was a big celebration to mark the occasion.
Superintendent Dr. Cedrick Gray led the way as the district officially kicked off the school year this morning.

More than 4000 JPS teachers and district employees packed the coliseum for the Back to School Convocation.

Teachers received words of encouragement and were urged to "reboot and upgrade".

Dr. Gray said, "What that really means is sort of restart and kick this engine into gear and then go to another level. It's an exciting time of year for us we want to take full advantage of it. Our parents and children deserve our full attention and 100 % of what we do everyday and that's what we're going to give them."

JPS students return to class Monday, August 18.
