Local law enforcement agencies emphasize importance of diversity training

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Crossing cultural barriers and curbing crime!

It's a goal two local law enforcement agencies are hoping to achieve.

The Jackson Police and Hinds County Sheriff Departments conducted a multicultural awareness training this morning at the JPD training center. Dozens of residents, city officials, and law enforcement officers were in attendance.

Jackson business owners were also present.

Some of them have already experienced crime at their places of business, and some came out to learn more about crime prevention.

WLBT spoke to Sheriff Tyrone Lewis and Interim Chief Lee Vance about the importance of diversity training.

Lewis said, "In particular the laws of governing when they run their business. They have cultures they're not accustomed to here, we want to make sure they can run their business through the culture here and understand the culture that they come from."

Both law enforcement agencies say they believe by building a stronger  partnership with all cultures, they will be able to reduce the opportunity of crime with pro active measures.
