JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Business could be turning the corner in one part of the capitol city where abandoned storefronts have dotted the landscape. In recent years companies have been abandoning south Jackson, but one company is changing that trend.

This week, USA pawn is moving from their McDowell road location, into their new Megastore.

"It's the biggest pawn shop in Mississippi," said USA Pawn President Brian Smith. "It's going to be 27 thousand square feet, but we don't want the size to scare anybody. We're still the family business we started 25 years ago."

USA Pawn loans cash on items such as electronics, tools, jewelry and guns.

Thursday local officials were on hand for a ribbon cutting at their grand opening.

"I think it's an indication that people's interest in our city is heightening," said Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber. "We've had not only local businesses but international businesses who are excited about Jackson but we talk about south Jackson it's extremely important."

Owner Brian Smith said the pawn business has changed in recent years, to compete with bigger stores and online shopping.

"We've become more retail oriented," said Smith. "We design our stores to be retail, to be inviting, to have ladies come in, look at our jewelry, guys come in catch deals on tools, guns electronics. We want everyone to come in, if you need to borrow money, we're here for that as well."

USA Pawn owners say they're dedicated to the community they do business in. They're a major sponsor of Joyce's Hope House, a Jackson shelter for teen runaways.

"We buy a lot of stuff now and a lot of the things we get don't normally sell well in pawn shops," added Smith. "We donate it to them, just to help them out. They're a great cause and we love being a part of it."

USA Pawn has been in business since 1989. Their first store opened on Woodrow Wilson Avenue that year.

They now operate six stores in central Mississippi.
