National University of Singapore Researchers Show Practicing Meditation Improves Mental Abilities

Kirkland, Washington (August 13, 2014) – A study conducted by a research team from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and published on Plos One last July claims the ancient meditation tradition of Vajrayana can enhance alertness and mental congnition.

The research team, led by Maria Kozhenikov and Ido Amihai, discovered that rather than relaxing the parasympathetic nervous system, which is linked with resting and rejuvenation typically associated with meditation, the Vajrayana meditation tradition stimulates the sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for the body’s fight-or-flight response.

The NUS study came to this conclusion after inviting long-term practitioners of the different meditation traditions from Nepal and Thailand to participate in the research. These practitioners were asked to work on computer-based visual tasks before and after meditating for 20 minutes. The researchers also performed electroencephalographic (EEG) and electrocardiographic (EKG) monitoring on the practitioners while the latter carried out computer tasks as well as during and after the meditation sessions. Through these tests, the researchers found the practitioners of Vajrayana meditation alone did better on cognitive tasks after meditation.

Kelly Ravenel, CEO of KellyRavenelYoga.com, said meditation, regardless of tradition or technique followed, can heighten a person’s mental faculties.

“It’s what meditation does,” she said. “It elevates you mentally because you get to become more focused and centered when you meditate. Meditation also clears the mind and makes it sharper. Practicing meditation techniques allow you to become more organized in your thoughts and become more efficient in your actions.”

Ravenel also said meditation is good not just for the brain but for the body itself, as it is a good way to manage stress, alleviate pain and promote better health in general.
