JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The idea to re-zone land around Smith Wills Stadium and Lefleurs Bluff State Park to commercial C-3 was met with opposition Wednesday. Opponents called it alarming and irresponsible.

The staff of the Jackson Planning Board recommended re-zoning 50 acres. That would allow big box stores like Costco to build on the heavily-traveled Lakeland Drive corridor.

But opponents fought the attempt to re-zone it. They wanted the area to remain green space, with museums, parks and recreational areas for the public.

"The idea of rezoning this area, specifically at Smith Wills Stadium, Michael B. Johnson and now I've learned the Jamie B Fowler Park from special use to c-3 is alarming," said Rick Cleveland. "We do not believe that a big box store fits into the character of this neighborhood."

The board voted the re-zoning motion down. Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber issued a statement saying he is not deterred by the action and will continue to fight on behalf of citizens.
