JPD officer attacked while making arrest

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson police officer has been hospitalized after being attacked in south Jackson. The department says it happened Wednesday night, while he was making an arrest at the intersection of Forest Hill Road and Raymond Road.

The precinct 1 officer was last listed in serious condition. He suffered several broken ribs and a punctured lung during the altercation.

It's unclear at this time if his attacker was armed with any type of weapon.

Jackson police arrested Tommy Johnson, and charged him with aggravated assault on an officer. He is being held without bond.

Police say they stopped him walking with a gas can, near an abandoned vehicle left in the middle of the street, where the altercation happened.

That incident is still under investigation
