Man struck and killed while mowing yard

LAWRENCE COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

According to Lawrence County Sheriff Joel Thames, 51-year-old Wade McElroy was killed Thursday when hit by a car while mowing his yard.

It happened at his home located at 193 Old Highway 27 North in Lawrence County around at around 5 pm.

Sheriff Thames says 21-year-old Kededron McClinton lost control of his car, which left the road sideways, and hit the rear of McElroy's lawn mower. The Mississippi Highway Patrol has reconstructed the accident and determined that McClinton was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Witnesses also told investigators that McClinton was speeding.

Sheriff Thames says his department is waiting on lab tests to determine if McClinton may have been under the influence. He says McElroy likely died instantly from the force of the high impact collision.

Sheriff Thames says McElroy was a fine man, well liked in the community and that the accident was "unbelievable".
