Probably to a degree, a lot of us who never really outgrew our childhoods can identify with the collection of dolls. Maybe not dolls for all of us, but it's something. CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

We are going to a house with a hundred stories, at least a hundred, maybe a thousand. In every room of this house you'll find groups of dolls, and each group has its own story.

In Melvin and Dora Evans' house, just east of Clinton, there are old dolls and new dolls, and in between dolls and dolls that have been handed down and handed off and bought and adopted and everything else you have to do to collect this many dolls and get them under one roof.

You'd think this was a life-long accumulation, but not really. Joyce Evans says her mother, former Jackson State English teacher Dora Evans, put all of this together way past her childhood.

All of the kids were out of the house and she had retired from Jackson State and then she sort of got a renewed interest in the dolls, said Joyce.

When Mrs. Evans was a child, she made a lot of her dolls from materials she had at hand. And she made many of these dolls in her collection now.

And I think when you need dolls that you have to be inventive when you can't buy them, added Joyce. "And then when you are old enough that you can afford to buy the dolls that you want, then that is what you do."

So now, Dora Evan's doll collection makes up for lost time and then some. Probably to a degree, a lot of us who never really outgrew our childhoods can identify with the collection of dolls. Maybe not dolls for all of us, but it's something.

And don't ever think this is that "second childhood" thing. You don't get a second childhood because you never really get rid of the first one. You just have to repress it until you get tired of that and then something like this happens. And usually people around you are glad you let it loose.

She makes the dolls for the most part," said Joyce. "She dresses them. But I play with them. So I'm the person, when I come home I'm always changing around the settings and posing them and still playing with the dolls."

And Joyce is still the one making up the scenarios of how each doll in the group is relating to the others and what they are saying to each other and what they are doing and what they will do next.

That's why the Evans house near Clinton has at least a hundred stories, if not a thousand. All depends on how much time you have to go from room to room and listen to your imagination as it listens to the dolls.
