Art of Life festival demonstrates independent living

RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It was a day of fun and art with a carnival atmosphere for LIFE of Mississippi. The Art of Life festival was held Sunday afternoon at the Mississippi Craft Center in Ridgeland.

Life of Mississippi is a non-profit center for independent living for people with significant disabilities. Artist Wyatt Waters put brush to paper demonstrating his water color technique.

Young and old were entertained by puppets and Marshall Ramsey and Banjo. Participants could also create their own artwork.

According to Life officials, there are about 470,000 people in the state with disabilities.

"The first couple of years were a little bit different,a little bit more formal, and this year we decided that we want to just have some fun with the kids. So let them come and be creative and get some artwork going," said Life of Mississippi Executive Director Augusta Smith. "This will bring awareness about people with disabilities living an everyday life and just being creative, and it will give everybody a chance to have some awareness about our agency."

This is the fourth year the festival has been held.
