BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Brandon city officials are conducting a city wide cleanup. It's all part of their long term plan for moving their city forward.

Brandon Mayor Butch Lee says first impressions are everything. That's why the city is pushing forward with plans to clean up unsightly properties.

This week the city is demolishing dilapidated properties off Mary Myles Drive on the north side of the city.

"This was a process on some of these structures we began over a year ago," said Mayor Butch Lee. "Went through all the public hearings right down the line, did everything by statute."

City leaders say the properties have been slated for demolition for several months.

Brandon is working towards completing goals in the city's comprehensive plan, which includes improvements to neighborhoods, parks and business areas.

Many of the properties that are being torn down have been an eyesore for residents for over a year.

"Were being proactive in our neighborhoods," added Mayor Lee. "We care about property values, we care about public safety and these are the things that help us prove that. It's one thing to say it but it's another to take these actions where the rubber meets the road so to speak."

City officials say their plan doesn't just include run down homes. They also plan to crack down on vehicles being left in yards and on the street, as well as other items that contribute to leaving neighborhoods unsightly.

Three homes in Brandon, have been torn down so far.
