Former Canton Alderman bribes his way into jail

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Attorney Gregory Davis and Acting FBI Special Agent in Charge, Johnnie Sharp, announced today that 58-year-old Calvin Louis Smith, a former Canton City Alderman, was sentenced to 66 months in prison.

His prison sentence will be followed by two years of supervised release, and Smith has also been ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.

In May, Smith was found guilty of accepting bribes in connection with a series of transactions made on behalf of the City of Canton, Mississippi. 

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by 
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jerry Rushing.
