MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Customers and employees at Wilson Premier Hyundai, on the East side of I-55 in Ridgeland, have been overlooking a construction zone for a few years now.

President Doug Wilson doesn't know how much longer the rickety wooden fence overlooking the new Frontage Road will last, and it looks like he will have to shoulder the inconveniences until next summer.

"Yeah, we got it on all three sides, but we just think it's gonna be wonderful," he says.

The project will widen the Interstate to four lanes in each direction between Old Agency Road and Highway 463, and will create a more efficient interchange near Madison Avenue. Projections called for the work to be finished by November 2014. But the date has been pushed back to May 2015, and it might go slightly beyond that.

Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall isn't surprised.

"It's reasonably on schedule, it's a little bit behind," said Hall. "But since the original contractor went broke and we had someone else step in, it's understandable. When we get through with it, it will be a real big city highway, the kind of highway you see in Atlanta and Dallas, places like that."

Hall says Yates Construction will be charged about $13,000 a day if the completion date misses the early May target.

For now, motorists will continue to endure the orange barrels, and Wilson will take it day by day.

"It's gonna be really nice when it gets finished," he said.
