Two Mississippi schools designated as Blue Ribbon Schools

Two Mississippi school have been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2014.

Caledonia Elementary School in Caledonia and St. James Catholic School in Gulfport were designated by the U.S. Department of Education as Blue Ribbon Schools for academic excellence and progress in closing achievement gaps.

U.S. Senator Thad Cochran commended the two schools on the achievement.

"President Reagan launched the Blue Ribbon School initiative to honor schools whose students and teachers demonstrate notable educational achievement," Cochran said.  "I commend Caledonia Elementary School and St. James Catholic School for being recognized nationally for their accomplishments, which reflect favorably on their students, teachers and the parents who support them."

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program was founded in 1982 to recognize the work of exemplary schools throughout the nation.

Two representatives from each Mississippi schools will be invited to Washington in November to attend a National Blue Ribbon Schools recognition ceremony, where each school will receive a plaque and flag to signify its Blue Ribbon status.
