Mississippi Supreme Court hears McDaniel challenge

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The Mississippi Supreme Court today heard Chris McDaniel's election challenge.

McDaniel tried to revive his lawsuit that sought to overturn his Republican primary loss to Sen. Thad Cochran.

It's not clear when justices will rule.

A judge ruled last month that McDaniel waited too long to challenge results of the June 24 GOP runoff.

The judge agreed with Cochran's attorneys, who cited a 1959 state Supreme Court ruling that a candidate must file a challenge within 20 days and McDaniel waited 41.

McDaniel's attorneys say state law was rewritten in the 1980s and doesn't specify a deadline.

McDaniel lost to Senator Cochran in a June 24 runoff election by more than 7,000 votes, but cited election irregularities when he filed his legal challenge.
