Road of Remembrance Clean-Up

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Saturday's beautiful weather made it the perfect day to enjoy the state fair or one of those college football games. The cooler temperatures also made it a great day to help turn one part of Jackson back into a place to truly remember.

Gripped with machetes, chainsaws and a skid steer a large group ranging from small children to adults helped the organization "C.L.A.I.M. Mentoring," put a big dent in the mini forest growing in the 500 block of Road of Remembrance in West Jackson.

"I've been dragging the trees putting them on the trailer and picking up the trash,
said fifth grader Colby Bilbro.

"We cut some of the trees and limbs down and filled three garbage bags up this morning,
said high school sophomore John Knight III.

"You have to clean up the community in order to make it clean,
said third grader Courtney Bilbro.

C.L.A.I.M. Mentoring Executive Director Seamel Mims grew up in the area and said Saturday's clean-up is in honor of an elderly resident.

"Ms. Stella Hunter was a lady that kept the area up she's now in a nursing home so what we want to do is make a tribute to her,
said Mims.

A lot of really tall bamboo and other greenery filled up the road, but now that it
's cleared out there's some hidden beauty that hadn't been seen in years. All of that greenery hid a small gazebo that was likely unseen for close to a decade.

"If they come through here and see this they might want to plant some flowers or something. I don't live out here but what we're doing is showing that we care for all the neighborhoods of Jackson,
said volunteer John Knight.

Third grader Chance Thurman agreed and said, "It just feels awesome that you can help the environment and help the neighborhood."
