New fire chief on a mission with plan to save lives

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -  Jackson's new fire chief is a veteran firefighter who returns to the department with a plan to save lives and property.
Chief R.D. Simpson was appointed by Mayor Tony Yarber and confirmed by the Jackson City Council in May.

Last August Simpson left the fire department as Deputy Chief of the Emergency Division.
Upon being tapped to lead Jackson's fire system he wants to increase the ranks to better respond to emergencies.

Simpson said 30 firefighters have been hired since his return. A recruit class with 28 candidates is currently underway.

"Right now we're at level three which is the best rating in the state, and we're working diligently to try to lower that, maybe to try to get that to a two. So we're working real hard to try to reduce our fire rating," said Simpson.

Jackson has about 360 firefighters. Simpson wants the number to reach 477.
