Trio of Bulldogs honored Monday

Starkville ( – Mississippi State junior quarterback Dak Prescott, sophomore linebacker Richie Brown and senior offensive lineman Ben Beckwith combined to earn six national or Southeastern Conference weekly honors Monday.

Prescott, a Heisman Trophy candidate, was named Athlon Sports' National Player of the Week for the second time in as many games after accounting for five total touchdowns and 356 yards of total offense in the 48-31 nationally-televised victory against No. 6 Texas A&M. The Haughton, La., star was also placed on the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll for week six, which is presented weekly to the players with the most versatile performances in college football. Lastly, the signal caller was one of eight quarterbacks to be named a “Star of the Week by the Manning Award, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced.

Brown was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week and the SEC Defensive Player of the Week. The Long Beach, Miss., native became the first SEC player since 2008 with three interceptions, tying a school record. Brown picked off three passes by A&M's Kenny Hill after Hill entered the game with just two interceptions in 202 career attempts. The honors mark the first of Brown's young career, as Brown became the first MSU player since Quinton Culberson (Nov. 5, 2006) to earn the Walter Camp weekly honor.

For the second time in as many games, Beckwith earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors from the league office. After picking up the award at guard for his performance at No. 8 LSU Sept. 20, the Benton, Miss., native was named the top offensive lineman this week as a result of playing every offensive snap at center and leading MSU's offense to 559 yards of total offense. Beckwith joins current NFL linemen Derek Sherrod (four times, 2010) and Gabe Jackson (three times, 2013) as the only Bulldogs in school history to earn the award multiple times in the same season.
