JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - A 16 year old has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting death of a man found on a south Jackson street. Meanwhile Jackson's police chief is urging that calmer heads prevail when there are conflicts.

JPD's homicide statistics are stacking up after a deadly weekend of shootings involving teenagers in the Capital City. Eighteen year old Diante Frank is homicide victim number 52.

His Facebook page says he attended Wingfield High school, but Saturday afternoon his life ended when police say he was shot once in the chest by a 16 year old.

Stephon Greenwatts was arrested Monday morning and charged with Frank's murder.

"They do know each other," said Commander Tyree Jones. "They are familiar with each other but what extent they were acquainted I'm not quite sure about that yet."

Greenwatts, who made his initial appearance without an attorney, was denied bond.

Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance says the community has become too tolerant of shootings involving young African American males.

"Eighteen year olds, 16 year olds, absolutely senseless," said Vance. "If we knew about these situations, these beefs, perhaps we could find a way to intervene, but it's very difficult for us because we don't know a lot of these issues are going on between people and conflict resolution is something we've got to get better at."

One day earlier officers investigated another fatal shooting. Sixteen-year-old Jamal Haralson's death was the 51st homicide of 2014. The teenager was shot multiple times Friday night in an abandoned house in the 700 block of Cedarhurst Road.

This weekend caps a year of violent incidents involving young African American males, victims of crimes as well as accused perpetrators.

A bond hearing for Stephon Greenwatts will be held at a later date.
