Friendship Dinner and Awards Ceremony

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - As unrest continues in the Middle East a group from Turkey has been working to educate people in Mississippi about their country and beliefs.  This is the eleventh year for the Friendship Dinner and Awards Ceremony by the Dialogue Institute.

One of the highlights Tuesday night was a sand artist who is in the state for the first time. Organizers say this is their way of giving back to the community, by bringing people from different faiths and cultures together to promote mutual understanding, respect, and cooperation.

"we have this week three celebrations," said Fatih Ozcan. "This week is the celebration for the Muslims, Christians, and Jews, last Saturday actually, so while there are lots of bad things happening all over the world we needed to light a candle for our community, so that is what this event is all about that."

As part of the Turkish Sacrifice Celebration, 600 pounds of meat will be donated to Stewpot Community Services. The Dialogue Institute has partnered with colleges and universities throughout the state.

Dr. Dan Jones, the Chancellor of Ole Miss, was guest speaker. Tougaloo College President Dr. Beverly Hogan received the Leadership Award and Rims Barber a long time community activist received the Public Service Award.
