JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Wesley Benson contacted me last month about 349 Glendale Street. The nuisance property is down the street from Wells United Methodist
Church, where he works, and across the street from where he lives.

"I've been here six years," said Benson. "Ain't nothing been done to it."

"How many times? How many times.?" Benson replied, when asked if he had tried to reach out to the city for help.

"We working on it. We working on it and they ain't working on nothing yet," said Benson when we asked about the city's response.

Shortly after our report aired on September 22, the city took action, posting a Jackson Police Department nuisance property notice on the house.

I contacted the owner of the property, Victor Williams, who lives in Virginia. He says he had no idea the property was in the condition it was. He said he was willing to do whatever it took to get it squared away and he contacted a gentleman named Marcus Baker.

"He called me and he told me the city had contacted him and told him he had to do something about the property," said Baker.

Equipped only with a pruning tool, Baker, single-handedly transformed this jungle-like eyesore into the easy-on-the-eyes property that is seen now.

"Well, I mean, to a lot of people it looked like a jungle. To me, it's just what I do," said Baker. "So, I don't really consider none of it a challenge. I enjoy doing it. I really enjoy doing it."

And Baker did it for a fraction of what it would have cost if someone else had done it.

Baker also said he contacted city officials.

"I did. I contacted them; just asked them how I could take on more of these properties because," said Baker. "I know Jackson is trying to stay on top of keeping the neighborhood looking nice. I'm somebody that's willing. I'm ready to go to work."

And people like Wesley Benson, who live along Glendale Street, are thankful for that. Marcus Baker says he's ready to take on other challenges like 349 Glendale Street. You can reach him at 769-218-2058.
