JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Department of Transportation is making significant job cuts.

We're told that 44 of MDOT's Right of Way Division employees were told they'll be employed with the department until January 2015.

The employees are being laid off because the amount of appraisal work has decreased by about 75 percent over the past 4 years. MDOT officials say the workload isn't expected to pick up.

MDOT released this statement:

"With this reduction in force, MDOT is proactively addressing the economic future of Mississippi by adopting best business practices, right-sizing our workforce and improving business processes with a focus on ways to reduce operational costs. This focus allows us to be more fiscally responsible and transparent with taxpayer dollars. "

We're told that further cuts are not planned at this time.
