SCOTT COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) - A Scott County woman has been arrested for the drowning death of her infant child. It happened in August, about five miles north of Forest.

Scott County Sheriff Mike Lee says on August 8th, Christopher Wilkerson, Junior died in a bathtub in a mobile home. He hadn't even reached his first birthday.

This week his mother, 25-year-old Amanda Strickland, was arrested and charged with Manslaughter and child abuse in the death of her son.  She is being held on a $200,000 bond.

Scott county investigators responded to the home after Strickland called 911 saying her child was unresponsive. She later told investigators that she had placed Christopher in the bathtub with the water running to play in the water.

She said there was not a stopper in the tub, so she thought the water would drain.

Strickland left the room and came back an hour later to find him unconscious.

"I think that anyone that is a parent, I think that anyone that isn't a parent, it effects you knowing your own children, and loving them since birth, it's just amazing the negligence that happened in this case, it's just unbelievable the time lapse," said Sheriff Mike Lee.

Investigators found a towel had fallen in the tub, causing it to fill with water.

Amanda Strickland's case will be presented to the grand jury in December. Two other children who were living in the home at the time, have been moved and are staying with relatives.
