CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - One of the busiest areas of Clinton sits on the border of Jackson. That's where Clinton Police Chief Mike Warren says his patrol unit will soon be housed in hopes of deterring crime.

"That is the goal," said Chief Warren. "To increase that visibility in that area in a hope to deter the crime."

Less than a mile from the city limits of Jackson, sitting off Highway 80 is the building Clinton Police's patrol unit will soon be housed in. Chief Warren says this move will also allow for faster response times.

"But, we are not going to detract from the other parts of town," added Chief Warren. "I don't want people to think we are sending everything over there. We are still going to have our officers in their regular beats on the northwest and southern parts of town."

Mayor Phil Fisher says this opportunity was made possible because a business owner in the city of Clinton offered to swap his vacant building in exchange for the city's Community Development and Main Street Building which sits in historic downtown Clinton.

"His plan is then to take the buildings and turn them into a restaurant which he is working on right now," said Mayor Fisher. "Our plan is to put the patrolling units, human resources and the community development in that building and then bring main street into city hall. We have a little cost that we will incur on the building that we are swapping, but after that, just the idea of getting it set up and rolling."

Chief Warren says he expects his patrol units to start operation in the new building in the next few weeks.
