Clergy group to hold event at Nissan plant

CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - A clergy prayer vigil and press conference are scheduled today at Nissan.

100 Mississippi faith leaders have also signed a petition.

According to a release from organizers, Concerned Clergy, a new network of pastors from across the state who are interested in workers rights in Mississippi will hold the vigil at the Canton Plant.

The petition expresses gratitude for employers such as Nissan, and also states members of the clergy recognize the need for Mississippi to attract more employers and be competitive in the global market.

The group says they are also calling on all employers to honor the basic dignity of employees.

Organizers say they hope the event will change the hearts and minds of companies like Nissan regarding their treatment of workers.

They cite such issues as safety, fairness, wages and the right to vote for unions in an atmosphere free of intimidation.

The vigil and press conference are scheduled for 11:15 this morning at the Nissan Plant.
