MSU #1, Ole Miss #4 in first College Football Playoff Top 25

JACKSON (WLBT) - The first College Football Playoff Top 25 poll was released on Tuesday. Three SEC teams are ranked in the top 4. Mississippi State is the number 1 team in the opening poll. The surprise is Ole Miss at number 4. If the season ended tonight, the Bulldogs would face the Rebels in a national semifinal. But there are a lot of games left in the regular season.

The College Football Playoff committee will release a Top 25 on November 4th, November 11th, November 18th, November 25th, and on December 2nd. The 12 members are emphasizing head-to-head results, conference champions, and strength of schedule. Head-to-head may be the reason why Ole Miss is in the top 4. The Rebels 23-17 victory over Alabama on October 4th could be a tiebreaker down the road.

Selection Sunday is set for December 7th. On that day the committee will select the top 4 teams for the playoff (semifinals are Sugar & Rose Bowls). They will also select the teams for the Fiesta, Orange, Cotton, and Peach Bowls.
