HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Willie Caston is cleaning up his property on Paul Williams Drive in Raymond. It was an antique store 50 years ago, but recently a man was living in it, and a month ago accidentally burned it down.

"Cleaning up the heavy stuff around it, moving stuff around it, get ready to start cleaning it up. Restore it," Caston tells us.
Caston says he hasn't gotten a visit by a Hinds County zoning officer, although his lot is on the list of properties that are the focus of the Zoning Department. There's a request for action on 15 properties around the County. They're considered unkempt and potential safety hazards. Some of the other properties are on Midway Road, Thigpen Road, and Highway 18. Others are in Jackson and Bolton.
"We've gotten complaints, several homeowners that are upset with how their neighbors or vacant properties have been maintained," said Darrel McQuirter, President of the Hinds County Board of Supervisors.

McQuirter says if the owners don't clean up the property after fair warning, they might have to state their case in front of the full Board. Then the County may go ahead and make the improvements at the owner's expense.

Residents can help by reporting unkempt properties.

"They can contact our permit and Zoning Department or contact the Supervisors, we'll send somebody out to look at it," McQuirter tells us, adding that we will likely see additional properties on the list in the coming months.
