MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - An elderly Madison homeowner is convinced his Chihuahua saved his life. Russell Hackman says his dog sensed something was wrong Sunday morning at 1:30 a.m. and woke him up anxious, whining.

He thought Webster needed to go outside, but that did not resolved the Chihuahua's apparent case of anxiety. Little did Mr. Hackman know, he was in imminent danger from his water heater, which was leaking gas.

"Theoretically it could have sparked and blown up or it could have seeped into the house an I could have gone to sleep forever," said Hackman.

Hackman, who lost his wife in 2007, was volunteering at Madison's Webster animal shelter in January, when he fell in love with the scruffy little dog. No one else had wanted the Chihuahua and they became inseparable.

The elderly man saved Webster from an unknown fate and in turn, the scrappy grey faced pet returned the favor Sunday morning.
