Madison Central golfer qualifies for Sanderson Farms Championship

JACKSON (WLBT) - Entering Monday, Jonathan Randolph was the only local product in the field for the Sanderson Farms Championship. Camden Backel has made sure the Sanderson has some more Mississippi flavor.

The Madison Central standout has qualified for this week's PGA Tour event. The 17-year old advanced in the Pre-Qualifier Friday with a 67. Backel followed that up with a 65 Monday in the Open Qualifier at Lake Caroline Golf Club.

86 golfers battled it out for 4 Sanderson spots in the Open Qualifier. Backel found himself in a eight-man playoff with Steve Marino, Matt Harmon, Brad Elder, Len Mattice, Jay Woodson, Shane Bertsch, and Smylie Kaufman for the final spot. He birdied the 10th hole and parred the 11th to win the playoff.

He will make his PGA Tour debut on Thursday. Madison Central head golf coach Todd Beach will serve as Backel's caddy.
