State Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps has abruptly resigned reportedly amid a federal investigation. Sources tell us authorities have moved to seize the Flowood home of the former Commissioner as well as his beachfront condo in Pass Christian and two Mercedes Benz sedans.
Epps has not been arrested, but we are told he is expected to appear in federal court Thursday.
Another element to this reported investigation, we have also confirmed through sources that Rankin County School Board President Cecil McCrory, who abruptly resigned his position Wednesday is connected to the investigation.
McCrory is listed as an owner of companies that do business with the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Those companies are Mississippi Correctional Communications, LLC and Correctional Communications LLC. McCrory has not responded to calls for comment.
Epps submitted his letter of resignation Wednesday to Governor Phil Bryant.
The governor has named Deputy Commissioner Richard McCarty as the interim leader of the state prison system until a permanent commissioner is selected.
Epps leaves as the longest serving commissioner of the MDOC. He was first appointed by Governor Ronnie Musgrove in 2002.
