JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Identity thieves are preying on Madison residents. We have learned hundreds of people are now victims of unemployment fraud across the entire state. The Attorney General's Office says it is investigating more than 100 cases statewide.

Identity thieves are making fraudulent unemployment claims under other people's identity who are currently employed. Not only are victims in Madison and surrounding areas, Executive Director of the Mississippi Department of Employment Security Mark Henry says the scam stretches across the state and farther.

"It's a huge national problem," said Henry. "The Mississippi Department of Employment Security has blocked over 200,000 fraudulent attempts to file for unemployment benefits in just the last two weeks."

The Attorney General's Office says this is a scam that has affected 200 people statewide, some of those cases in the Madison area. The AG's office is working closely with the department of employment security to keep you safe.

"We've organized an unemployment benefits integrity task force here at the department of employment security that is constantly searching for new and innovative ways to block or identify possibly fraudulent applications for unemployment benefits," added Henry.

So how can you protect yourself from becoming a victim?

"Of course be very careful about your personal information," Henry suggests. "Try to keep it as safeguarded as you can. Be very weary of anyone who asks you particularly of your social security number."

If you believe you are a victim, report the problem to MDES as well as police and the attorney generals office.
