PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The best of the best make the cut and now face months of training to join the ranks of the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Cadets arrived at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Memorial Complex in Pearl Sunday for the first day of rigorous physical training and academic testing.

MHP Cadet Class 61 has 75 recruits with 61 alternates.

This is the first training class since 2011.

Upon taking the oath, troopers are responsible for enforcing traffic laws on state and federal highways, assisting local law enforcement agencies and responding to statewide emergencies.

"We're not looking for anybody that's looking for a job. We're looking at people that want to be state troopers. We're the shortest we've ever been, the highway patrol is right now. We're down to 481 troopers that's statewide," said Department of Public Safety Commissioner Albert Santa Cruz.

"It's very important the more troopers you have on the road the more people you can provide safety to. We can respond to accidents quicker and we can be out there to assist the public in a timely manner," said MHP spokesman Trooper Eric Henry.

The cadet training classes run through April 1, 2015.
