RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said a Nissan passenger car struck  a pedestrian Sunday around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 49 and Highway 469 in Florence, near Waffle House.

We're told the victim, a 44-year-old man, was airlifted to UMMC with critical injuries.

Sheriff Bailey said the force of the impact threw the man at least 10 feet. The car then sped off.

Bailey said witnesses provided a description of the vehicle, enabling deputies to catch the driver north of the accident on Highway 49.

"The driver, 43-year-old Robert Watson of Ridgeland, has been arrested and charged with suspicion of DUI," Bailey added.

"Obviously someone is innocent until proven guilty, but there's a strong suspicion alcohol was involved," Bailey explained.

The sheriff said authorities are working on checking Watson's blood to determine blood-alcohol level.

At one point, traffic on Highway 49 N was backed up more than two miles from Highway 469. The accident occurred in the northbound lanes.
