FLORENCE, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Rankin County deputies have identified the victim in Sunday evening's hit-and-run accident on Highway 49.

Sheriff Bryan Bailey said 44-year-old Phil Landrum of Dublin, Ga., remains in critical condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Bailey said the driver of a 2013 gray Nissan passenger car struck Landrum while crossing Highway 49 near the Highway 469 intersection.

Witnesses at the scene told deputies the suspect's vehicle continued north on Highway 49.

Bailey said the impact threw Landrum at least a good ten feet down the highway.

Law enforcement stopped 43-year-old Robert D. Watson of Ridgeland a short time later, after he had stopped at a church off Highway 49 to check his vehicle's damage.

Bailey said Watson remains behind bars in the Rankin County Jail, charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and felony DUI resulting in death or disfigurement with no bond.

Watson's vehicle was impounded at the Rankin County Sheriff's Office to be held as evidence.

Bailey said Watson is expected to appear before Rankin County Judge Kent McDaniel on the charges soon.
