JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Hundreds of Jackson Public School students filled up the Jackson Convention Complex Tuesday to explore dozens of careers.

The Alignment Jackson Career Exploration Fair gave JPS freshmen the chance to check out various professions by actually doing the work.

For example, students practiced working as a beautician and got to check out the culinary arts by helping decorate a cake. There was also an exhibit on making it in TV news and a number of professionals showed students various aspects of the medical industry.

JPS Superintendent Dr. Cedrick Gray said the fair was an opportunity to encourage students to think beyond high school.

"We understand that students begin to become disengaged in 9th grade if they have been academically challenged or academically frustrated and so we need an opportunity, they need an opportunity to somehow re-engage to be connected to high school to see the importance of finishing high school," said Dr. Gray.

Gray said the Career Exploration Fair will become an annual event. He says it's one of many initiatives to boost graduation rates.
