Slain Mississippi civil rights leaders awarded Medal of Freedom

The White House has announced its 19 picks for the annual Medal of Freedom. Three slain Freedom Summer workers are among the honorees.

The medal will be awarded on Nov. 24 to the families of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, who were killed on June 21, 1964, near Philadelphia, Mississippi.

This year's other nominees include Meryl Streep, Stevie Wonder, Tom Brokaw, Ethel Kennedy, John Dingall and Marlo Thomas. The award is the nation's highest civilian honor and goes to people who have contributed to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

President Obama says he looks forward to presenting the awards at the White House on November 24th.
