My Turn: Mississippi Corruption

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - A recent study showed that based on public employees convicted on Federal corruption charges Mississippi was the most corrupt state. Needless to say I was not pleased to see Mississippi on another bad list.

Then comes the arrests of Department of Corrections Commissioner, Chris Epps and Rankin County businessman Cecil McCrory in what can only be described as blatant corruption.  The alleged 49 counts of bribes, money laundering and tax evasion are especially shocking when Epps was so well regarded.

There is overwhelming evidence against Epps and McCrory and the justice system will determine their guilt or innocence, but for this type of corruption to have gone on for so long also shows the state doesn't have a strong enough checks and balance in the system to prevent this type of corruption.

If this level of conduct is occurring on the State level, then you know it is happening on the local level.
