JACKSONVILLE, AL (WBRC) -

The Calhoun County coroner has identified the person shot and killed by a Jacksonville police officer on Tuesday night at an apartment complex near Jackson State University.

Coroner Pat Brown says David McBrayer, 26, was killed in the shooting.

The State Bureau of Investigations is investigating the officer-involved shooting that occurred at 11:20 p.m. Tuesday at Coliseum Apartments on Nisbet Lake Road in Jacksonville.

Jacksonville police say an officer discharged his weapon while defending himself from a suspect with a knife who was in close proximity to police officers. The suspect died at the scene.

Officers say the suspect was a white male and was told several times to put down the knife before shots were fired.

At 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, police officers responded to the location regarding car windows being shot with a BB gun. Officers took the report from the victim. The suspect had fled the area before the officers arrived.

Officers returned to the area at 11:20 p.m. after being notified the suspect had returned to the area. The suspect was located after a search of the area.

Antinie Dozier witnessed the incident.

"They went and beat on his front door. He came out the back door, lit a cigarette and started slowly walking up the hill. Then the cop came walking around the edge of the apartment, saw him and kind of briskly walked. I think he kinda ran to catch up to him and then you heard screaming over there and then you heard five gunshots," Dozier said.

Jacksonville Police is being assisted by the ABI, JSU and Weaver Police Departments, JSU Center for Applied Forensics and the Calhoun County Coroners Office.

The SBI will lead the investigation going forward.

"It's obvious we've had an officer-involved shooting. We are not going to investigate it. It will be investigated by the Alabama Bureau of Investigations. They are on scene. Any further details, we're right in the middle of the investigation at this time," Jacksonville PD's Assistant Chief Bill Wineman said.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is now called the State Bureau of Investigations.
