Never too late to winterize

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Some of the coldest air of the season is moving into Mississippi. With a polar plunge people are flocking to big box stores and hardware stores to get prepared. Here are a few tips for winterizing your home.As they say it is never to late to get ready for it.

I ran into Pastor Henry Harkins who shared some wisdom about broken pipes and those high utility bills. He said, "That's what happened last year my pool pipe broke because it wasn't weatherized properly."

So there are lots of simple ways that you can winterize your home right now. Even during the colt snap. Be sure and protect indoor and outdoor pipes. This is what plumber John Kimbrell had to say, "A lot of cold weather coming up what do you advise people to do. Insulate your pipes. How? By using a foam pipe insulation." He also suggested when temperatures drop well below freezing be sure and leave hot and cold water trickling inside.

You can also reverse your ceiling fan to keep warm air circulating. Another easy relatively cheap fix for your home is foam tape that can go in your doors and  keep the air out.  There are also window insulation kits that roll on.

You don't want to forget about your water faucets on the outside of the home. Kimbrell added, "The insulators come in small cones and you can stick them over them and tighten the strap up and they stay on. A lot of people don't understand that the hose bib itself holds water inside. That little bit of water can freeze and bust the hydrant and make a mess."
