Cold weather shelters available to those in need

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Folks from the Stewpot Community Services want to remind folks in need that they can provide a warm place to stay from the cold.

When temperatures reach freezing and below the Stewpot Opportunity Center opens around the clock to help out the homeless. The capacity is 50 and on Thursday night 32 people took shelter at the center.

Stewpot Opportunity Center Director Christie Burnett hopes the community can help the shelter feed all of the people that use its services.

"We're just asking for restaurants or groups or businesses to commit to saying hey maybe once a month or twice a month we would be willing to provide a meal for between 20 and 50 folks just so we can have a hot meal for the clients," said Burnett.

To contact the Stewpot's general number call 601-353-2759. The number to the Opportunity Center is 601-949-3540. Here's a link to the organization's website as well. http://stewpot.org/.
