JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hundreds gathered at Peoples Funeral Home Saturday to say a final goodbye to a Jackson State football hero.

Troy Mason passed away on November 9th at the age of 70. Mason is best known for being in the group of 11 football players drafted into the NFL from Jackson State in 1969. The wide receiver played briefly for the Dallas Cowboys.

His friends say he was also a Vietnam Veteran.

"He did a lot for the community. He actually ran the Outward Bound program along with Richard Harvey and Harold Jackson when I was coming up as a kid," said Johnny Morrow.

"Very good gathering. It's a sad occasion like Johnny said, but you know," added Billy Joe Hudson.

Mason leaves behind a wife, two daughters and four grandchildren.
