JPD detective recognized by violent crime victims

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Violent crime victims honor a local law enforcement officer during ceremonies Saturday in Jackson.

K-9 Detective Anthony Fox was presented the Second Annual "Detective Eric Smith Award".

The Victims of Violent Crimes held the event at the Jackson Medical Mall during its "Right to Live Recognition Summit."

Detective Smith, an 18-year veteran with the Jackson Police Department, was fatally shot while interrogating a suspect in April of 2013.

Fox, a vice and narcotics detective, said he admired Detective Smith for his professionalism and integrity.

"This is an award that holds sentimental value to me because I personally knew Eric Smith. He was a great officer, a great detective. Of all the awards that I have received this is one I will cherish most," said Detective Fox.

The Victims of Violent Crimes is a support group started by president and CEO Larry Nelson in 2007.
