Taking Back Our Neighborhoods- 3 Updates

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
We have updates on three nuisance properties we've been monitoring, in this Taking Back Our Neighborhoods report.

First, an update on 3523 Capitol Street, a trash-laden, dilapidated house across the street from Dudley and Leola Lovett. They said it is a haven for illegal activity.

Leola Lovett said people are in and out of there all the time, day and night, "It's a whole lot of illegal mess going on over there."

That illegal mess may be coming to an end soon. JPD officer Colendula Green, who is also spokesperson for community improvement, said a demolition hearing from 3523 Capitol Street has been set for December 2nd.

Remember 260 Marla Avenue? Weeds had taken over and the carport had caved in much to the frustration of this neighbor, who asked not to be identified.

The frustrated neighbor said, "We've called the city a number of times on the properties, but they don't seem to worry about; care about it and keep telling, they'll get to it when they get to it."

A week after my report aired in September, the weeds were gone but the caved in carport remained. Now, the debris from the carport has been removed.

And then there is 2101 Oakhurst Drive. As you can see, nothing has changed. In fact, it may be worse now. Hinds County Landrolls list the owner as Delories L. Garner. Property taxes had been paid through 2009 and redeemed the following year. Back in August, a city official told me 2101 Oakhurst Drive had been assigned a case number and was ready to add to the next available bid pack for demolition.
