22% of Alzheimer's caregivers are in debt

More than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer's, and the family members caring for them are spending thousands a year on caregiving.

According to a new report released today by Caring.Com, nearly half (42%) of family members caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's or other dementia spend more than $20,000 per year on caregiving.

The report also finds 62% of family caregivers are paying for caregiving out of their own savings, while 22% say the cost has put them in debt.

A stunning 97% say their personal relationships have suffered or ended as a result of caring for a loved one with alzheimer's or dementia.

November is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness month and National Family Caregivers month.

On Friday, industry experts will join a twitter chat about how to support Alzheimer's caregivers. The chat can be followed at hashtag-a-l-z-care (#ALZcare).
