JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Beginning Thursday, Nov. 20, the intersection of Capitol Street and West Street will change from a traffic signal to a roundabout. During construction, the intersection has been controlled by the existing traffic signal.

On Thursday the traffic signal will be turned off and removed to allow the contractor to continue construction on the north side of the intersection.  The change from a traffic signal to a roundabout will improve traffic flow of Capitol Street once two-way conversion is completed.

Driving in a roundabout can be best summarized with two rules:

  • Motorists entering the roundabout must yield to motorists already in the roundabout circle.
  • Motorists entering and exiting the roundabout must yield to pedestrians in the brick crosswalks on each side of the roundabout.
Construction is still underway on the roundabout center island and along the north side of Capitol Street on both sides of West Street.  Due to the close proximity of construction and construction workers to both sides of the roundabout, trucks on Capitol Street eastbound will be temporarily prohibited from making a left turn onto West Street northbound.

Trucks should use an alternate route while the left turn is prohibited. Once construction is complete, trucks will be allowed to make the left turn.

All motorists should drive with care in the work zone.

This is the last of three intersections on Capitol Street that will be converted from a traffic signal to a roundabout.  The intersections of Capitol Street at Lamar Street and Capitol Street at Farish Street were changed from a traffic signal to a roundabout back in the summer.
