JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - A high-speed race on a Jackson roadway led to a man's death, according to one witness at the scene. Gregory Stifl watched the events leading up to that fatal crash unfold in front of him, and said it all could have been avoided.

Saturday JPD Officer Colendula Green identified the fatal accident victim as Patrick Bryant. No age or hometown was provided on Bryant.

"They took off speeding down through there, and as they were coming down, we were hoping a car wouldn't pull out in front of them," said Stifl.

Stifl said he and others were stuck in traffic on Medgar Evers Boulevard, blocked by two people on motorcycles, clearing the way for an illegal race during rush hour.

"After traffic mostly cleared out through here, they thought, which it was, because we looked ahead down the road and wasn't nothing down there in front of them. They sped off and in a few seconds, it was all over," he said.

The two riders raced down Medgar Evers Boulevard at speeds of almost a hundred miles an hour, Stifl said.

After about a half-mile, a Chevrolet Avalanche pulled out onto the boulevard from a side street. One motorcycle swerved to miss the truck, but the other couldn't stop in time.

"The impact was very, I saw everything, and was hoping he wasn't dead, but I walked back up here from the house, saw he was limped all up," added Stifl.

AMR responded to the scene minutes after the collision. Stifl said he believes the man died almost immediately after the wreck, but questions why it even happened.

"Why would they want to race right here on this busy highway, on a Friday in 5 o'clock traffic?" said Stifl.

The Hinds County coroner has not released the victim's name. In addition, Jackson police have not confirmed anything relating to the incident.
