Thanksgiving for the homeless

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Homeless men and women, and even families, tend to congregate at Poindexter Park in Jackson. On Saturday, a Christian Group decided to do something special. They decided to have a big, all-day Thanksgiving feast for those people.

We talked to a woman who was there with her three children, ages 5, 3, and 2. She asked us not to use her name. She and her kids are homeless.

"I'm staying at a shelter right now with my kids so I'm very appreciative," she says, adding that times had just gotten tough for her. "But with God, there's nothing that's not possible. I'm still going to make it, I strive every day."

She wanted to get them a hot lunch, which included hot dogs and deep-fried Thanksgiving turkey. Members of Mississippi Racers, a car racing club, and Bridges Christian Learning Center put together a cookout at Poindexter Park for Jackson's homeless community. They're being fed breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

"Sometimes they sleep out here. Sometimes this is the safest place for them. But we're just out here, we want to let them enjoy the day and have a good time," says Deborah Holmes-Robinson with Bridges Christian Learning Center.

Men, women, and children came out and enjoyed the music and the fellowship, provided by people that are happy to lend a hand.

"It could be us tomorrow. What we do is try to go to the shelters, Brumfield, Stewpot, and try to gather up all the people that we can in Jackson, bring them over here, and give them a good hot breakfast, lunch, and dinner," says Kenneth Kennedy, member of Mississippi Racers.

And a separate outreach group was on hand earlier Saturday to give out gloves and coats and hats to the people who need them.
