Deer hunters find body in Holmes County dumped in field

HOLMES COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Deer hunters stumbled upon a body dumped in rural Holmes County Saturday, now investigators are trying to solve the mystery surrounding the woman's death.

Holmes County Sheriff Willie March has identified the victim as 29-year-old Bettina Crigler of Tchula.

A hunter saw Crigler's body in a field on Howard Road, thinking at first it was a deer.

Deputies responded to the scene around 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

March said the body was found about a fourth of a mile from Howard Road, which is approximately five miles south of Tchula.

The sheriff said Crigler's body appeared to have suffered blunt force trauma, but an autopsy will be conducted.

The State Crime Lab is assisting in this investigation.

Other sources tell WLBT that Crigler was reportedly last seen sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning in Holmes County getting into a pickup truck occupied by several people. The sheriff would not confirm that information and said Crigler had not been reported missing.

The sheriff is asking anyone with information about the homicide to call the Holmes County Sheriff's Department at 662-834-1511 or Crimestoppers at 662-834-0099.
