JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Age is just a number when it comes to one Jackson woman's dedication to making life better for the less fortunate each Christmas season.

Ninety-eight-year old Jeffie Carter is a bell ringer with the Salvation Army's Women's Auxiliary.

You can see her smiling face outside McDade's at Maywood Mart in Jackson.

Carter, a retired educator, taught at George and Poindexter Elementaries and spent the last 25 years of her career at Spann Elementary.

At nearly a century, she says the key is to be happy and to love to live and help others.

"Ninety eight to me is not old, but most folks are dead before 98. I wouldn't do it if I didn't have fun. I enjoy it. They always put money in the pot, and I guess maybe it's because i'm so old,' said Carter.

The Jackson resident has been a bell ringer since retiring in 1983.
